Project Description
The exhibit will feature two stylized walls positioned parallel to one another across an open area.
Wall #1 will be comprised of 9 wooden panels, all interlocking to create a wall ten feet tall and fifty feet wide. On the center panel, will be mounted a three-dimensional stylized Christian cross, made to resemble the Twin Towers. The wall is collaged with pages from the Qur’an, Bible, and Torah in an intertwined and overlaid technique.Flanking the cross on either side, will be two colossal painted graphics: one will be the Star of David and the other the Islamic Crescent Moon and Star. The panels behind the painted images will be collaged with pages from the Qur’an, Bible, and Torah in an intertwined and overlaid technique.
Centered in the space between the two walls will be a presentation of shoes from those who perished in the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent wars. The empty shoes are reminders of the lives lost in this conflict and will visually connect the parallel walls across the open space.
Wall #2 will also feature 9 wooden panels, interlocking to create a wall ten feet tall and fifty feet wide. The center-point is dominated by two high relief structures that symbolize the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Each 3-dimensional tower measures 4’ wide x 4’ deep x 20’ high. The towers will rise ten feet above the wall itself. The surface area surrounding the images is collaged with pages from the Qur’an, Bible, and Torah in an intertwined and overlaid technique.
CREATIVE PROCESS FOR THE EXHIBIT
Following the design phase, my studio will establish scheduled times in select locations for the public to participate in a co-creative experience on the walls using the select artistic media. That media will include photographs, news articles, small slips of paper bearing the names of all the victims of 9/11, sheets of paper on which individuals can write their own messages to add to the wall, as well as pages from the Bible, Torah, and Qur’an. After this process is complete, the walls will be returned to my studio where I will reflect upon the public content, determine its influence over my creative input and finish the work.
